I am in the process of setting a programme for a rider who is returning to fitness and eventually racing after a bad fall last Decenber in which he broke the head of his femur and has had to have it pinned back together.
He now has the all clear to resume cycling from the hospital physio and I am mindful of the following points in his programme:

Start gradually and closely monitor progress

Keep gearing nice and low at first and only gradually increase the load placed on the inured leg

Encourage plenty of flexibility excercises

Give enough rest to ensure complete recovery of injury is not hindered.

Not return to racing to early.

Can anyone add any ten penneth's worth's of additional things to take in to account or does anyone have any direct experience of rehabilitation after this kind of injury Question

All thoughts welcome.

Thanks.

Lucy.

Hi Lucy

I am working with a rider that recently broke his hip.   The benefit I have is that he is an experienced cyclist so knows his body and I have been working with him for long enough to know that he will be sensible - so it helps to know your rider.

I think your list is pretty good but would add to ensure that the rider listens to their body and backs off if necessary.

It is very much a case of monitor each individual situation when you have an injured rider and ensuring good communication between rider and coach. Feedback is vital.

Good luck with it.

Thanks Pocket Rocket,

I'll let you know how things go.

Cheers.

Lucy.
