I've been riding my fixed gear bike this winter just to bring some variety to the training. I haven't mastered track stands yet. Wondered how many people out there used fixed out on the road and what experiences people had, ie what gains did you find in terms of your fitness and strength?

| Bernard Hinault said that as a pro he no longer used fixed in winter because of the leg speed he'd acquired when younger. Improved 'leg speed' seems to be the most-frequently quoted reason for the fixed. Belgian roadmen used to ride a single freewheel. When I began riding the use of a low fixed during the winter (often 59") was associated with the RTTC time-trial system. You started very low and worked up to 84" for important races. There seem to be few advantages for riders who are going to spend the season on variable gears. |

Thanks Ray - interesting
It is certainly harder riding the fixed and does give the opportunity to incorporate strength and leg speed into one session. If nothing else, makes a pleasant change.
