I have strongly considered both, even considered selling my best bike for an SRM crankset knowing that the accuracy of training and racing feedback would be second to none, and from there I would expect improvements in training and racing to be also second to none. (spending money and comprimising on prized posessions being a grand motivator!).
SRM kit is the industry standard, but they like any other piece of technology, have issues. Powertap is said to be at least an equal in accuracy to SRM though using a wheel based system. The cheaper systems are said to lose accuracy at higher workloads.
I use a Racermate Computrainer for testing, coaching and my personnal training (which I sold my TT bike to pay for incidently), which is said to be on a par with both the SRM and Powertap systems, both of which I considered before buying the more coaching friendly Computrainer.
The software is not the most user friendly but managable, and for your ventures into ultra endurace events, a godsend on nasty days due to 'real' course video packages and endless options for course creation.
Turbo's are an unbeatable time efficient performance tool in my opinion.

I agree with all you say, as you will see from my blog. I'm a big fan of all things RacerMate and went down the PowerTap route. I have made similar sacrifices to you in terms of paying for gear which has, in the long run, helped me to improve significantly and on an ongoing basis.
Cheers,
Q
